Our Integrated Experiential Education Approach
The Phoenix Magnet Academy model effectively integrates experiential education into academic teaching, prioritizing deeper learning and flexible learning environments. Deeper learning is achieved through “doing” rather than passive listening or reading. Similarly, both concept based learning, the development of students core and curricular competencies, and authentic tasks that connect learning to the real world, all help engage PMA students. Experiential education is a teaching and learning approach that involves active, hands-on, and immersive experiences. It emphasizes learning through direct experience and reflection on that experience, that aligns seamlessly with project based learning. This type of education can take many forms, such as outdoor education, service learning, internships, and simulations.
Experiential education encourages learners to take an active role in their education and to learn by doing. It aims to create opportunities for learners to develop their skills, knowledge, and attitudes by engaging in real-world scenarios, problem-solving tasks, and reflection on their experiences.
One of the key benefits of experiential education is that it can promote deeper learning and long-term retention of knowledge. By engaging in hands-on experiences, learners can develop a better understanding of concepts and theories, and apply them in practical settings. Experiential education can also enhance learners’ communication, teamwork, and leadership skills, which are critical for success in many fields.
Each year, PMA’s senior students are invited to take part in an exclusive aviation program with the Pacific Flying Club. Through this immersive experience, students gain a hands-on understanding of Bernoulli’s principle—a key concept in fluid dynamics that explores the relationship between pressure, density, speed, and altitude. They also receive personalized instruction from experienced pilots and have the unique opportunity to fly a plane on their own!
