A Day of Discovery at Science World in Vancouver
PMA students recently enjoyed an extraordinary day of learning, creativity, and exploration during a field trip to Vancouver Science World. The day was filled with engaging activities and interactive exhibits. These immersive experiences sparked curiosity and deepened their understanding of various subjects.
Bringing Code to Life: Integrating Math and Art with Finch Robots
In the Finch Robot Workshop, students engaged in a coding session, allowing them to further develop their programming skills. They programmed robots to draw triangles on paper, an activity that seamlessly combined creativity, geometry, and computational thinking. By integrating art and technology, this workshop demonstrated how math and coding can work together to create innovative outcomes.
Exploring Science and the Human Body: A Journey Through Interactive Exhibits
The exploration continued in the Eureka! Gallery, where students delved into the principles of water, light, sound, and motion through interactive exhibits. They operated water cannons to investigate the intricacies of fluid dynamics, solved challenging puzzles to enhance their critical thinking, and played the famous infrared harp. This unique instrument transforms beams of light into music, offering a hands-on lesson about infrared light’s ability to carry signals and its applications in technologies like remote controls and fiber optics.
In the BodyWorks Gallery, students immersed themselves in the fascinating world of human anatomy and biology. They explored detailed displays about organ systems, the effects of exercise on the body, and the importance of maintaining healthy habits. The interactive exhibits allowed them to measure their reaction times and test their flexibility, providing practical insights into how the human body functions and adapts.
The Illusions and Perception Exhibits provided an intriguing look at how the brain interprets visual and sensory information. Optical illusions and sensory displays highlighted the science behind perception, cognitive biases, and the ways our brains fill in gaps to create a version of reality. This thought-provoking experience challenged students to critically examine how science and design shape their perceptions.
Discovering Visual Storytelling at the National Geographic Exhibition
The day concluded with the breathtaking National Geographic Photography Exhibition: “Step into Spectacle.” This immersive exhibit showcased stunning photography that emphasized the power of visual storytelling. As a result, students gained a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of ecosystems, cultures, and humanity while learning how photography can raise awareness about global issues. The exhibit inspired a new understanding of how storytelling can be a powerful tool for conservation and fostering cultural awareness.
Through these diverse activities, students not only expanded their knowledge across science, technology, and art but also developed critical thinking and creative skills. It was a day filled with discovery, innovation, and inspiration – one that left a lasting impact on everyone involved!
